What We Do in Response
Chapter 13: Breaking the Cycle of Student Misbehavior
This chapter relates to APS 9 Managing the Classroom. An effective teacher maximizes instructional time by efficiently managing student behavior, instructional routines and materials, and essential noninstructional tasks.
When reading the chapter, I found that an important part of breaking the cycle of student misbehavior is to create positive connections with my students. Many times this year, when my students are misbehaving, I have asked myself why are they behaving this way. As Rick Smith states," we may need to address the reason behind the misbehavior." I try to get to know my students outside the classroom. Many times, if a student is misbehaving, I will talk to the student one-on-one. During these chats I will often find out that a family member has left or the student had to move to another home. I keep these realities in mind and try to help my students behave correctly. I have found that by making positive connections with my students, they are more willing to tell me about things happening at home. Positive connections, like high fives and simply listening, have had a great impact in my classroom this year.

Chapter 14: Putting it all Together-Final Thoughts
This chapter relates to APS 9 Managing the Classroom. An effective teacher maximizes instructional time by efficiently managing student behavior, instructional routines and materials, and essential noninstructional tasks.
When I observe another teacher, I look to see visuals for the students. I look to see if the English language learner will be able to determine the rules and procedures in the classroom. As an ESOL teacher I know that my students need to have a visual. Also when I observe another teacher I look for things that I would like to incorporate into my classroom. I also look for ways to make my lessons engaging for my students. As I read chapter 14, I found that Rick Smith says that learning is exhilarating. I want my lessons and my classroom to be an engaging learning center for all of my students. As a growing educator, I constantly look for new ways to motivate my students.
